INSOMNIA is set in the town of Derry, Maine. Natalie Deepneau: Helen and Ed's baby girl. We learn she's a good friend of Ralph, and helped him with his wife's funeral procession. Helen Deepneau: Ed's wife who is introduced bleeding, bruised and holding her baby, running to the Red Apple (the market place), after being beat up by her husband. However, he's pretty volatile guy who beats up his wife, and is the antagonist of the novel. She begins the female-hero of the story and a love-interest to Raplh.Įd Deepneau: In Ralph's mind, we get to know Ed as the kind of guy that would lend a helping a hand to anyone in the world, and a really cool guy. She also seems to have connections with people to instigate gossip. Lois seems to have a lot of ties to people and town and likes to play poker "with the girls". Lois Chasse: The girl friend of Ralph and Bill. She's never actually in the story presently, but we get to know her slightly through Ralph's memories.īill McGovern: Bill is an old man who lives in the same apartment house as Ralph, and they are also friends who like to sit out on the front porch and talk, while sucking back on some beer. Ralph Roberts: The seventy-year-old hero of the story who, after losing his wife, falls into a state of insomnia and begins seeing auras around people and the enviornment.Ĭarolyn Roberts: Ralph's wife who dies in the prologue to a brain tumor. And he sees three little bald doctors in the homes of the dying-and he begins to suspect who they really are. He sees Charlie Pickering with blood in his eyes and a gleaming knife in his hand. He sees a nice young research chemist like Ed Deepneau turn into a savage wife beater. He sees auras around human beings that show him the horror threatening them. Ralph Roberts is seeing some strange happenenings in Derry, Maine.
